Seattle Composter Goes Big With the Multistar 3SE
Cedar Grove Composting near Seattle is one of the country’s leading composting facilities, with a long tradition of technological innovation. Visitors from the area and from around the world visit the company to learn about their advanced composting processes. Cedar Grove’s Everett location is the largest of its kind in the world, and the company has a history of being the first to adopt or develop many technologies.
So it’s fitting that Cedar Grove recently became the proud owner of the largest stationary star screen in the United States. The Komptech Multistar 3SE is the highest volume stationary star screen available anywhere, and its combination of high throughput and high efficiency was exactly what the company was looking for. Cedar Grove does high volumes in a very small area, so they needed a screen that can keep up with the large amount of incoming very wet compost, while removing light film plastic. They wanted to make three fractions: finished compost, a 1” compost or fuel product, and overs. They also wanted to remove film plastic from the middles and overs, and remove rocks from both fractions as well. Prior to the Multistar 3SE, Cedar Grove had used a very large custom trommel screen. The screen did not remove plastic very well and was starting to show its age, with frequent stoppages and breakdowns. A year earlier, Cedar Grove had purchased a Multistar L3 for the Everett location, which had been very successful at removing film plastic from 1” and overs. When the decision was made to replace the aging trommel in Maple Valley they wanted to go BIG, and there is nothing bigger than the Multistar 3SE. They ordered it with a custom 40 cubic yard hopper that could be loaded from both sides by loaders with 10 yard buckets. Cedar Grove provided the concrete wall and the stackers, and after a week’s assembly time they were up and screening.
The Multistar 3SE is a stationary star screen specifically designed for the big jobs. Like its mobile cousins, it lives up to its name by starring in multiple roles, separating feedstock into 3 fractions plus windsifting, stone and FE separation. Operation is easy, with fraction size changes on the fly at the press of a button, and like all Komptech machines it is extremely quiet and energy efficient – in fact, the Multistar 3SE is 30% more energy efficient than any other diesel-hydraulic screener. And as Cedar Grove discovered, throughput is very high - in one shift they can screen 3,000 cubic yards of material!
