Mixed waste

MBT plants

In a MBT (mechanical-biological treatment) plant mixed waste streams are treated by mechanical means such as shredding, screening and separation, as well as by biological processes.

At the start of treatment, waste is opened up by a pre-shredder. Pre-sorting can be done prior to this if necessary.

Following shredding, a drum screen separates out the organics as the undersize fraction.

Recyclables are pulled from the oversize fraction by sorting, magnetic separation and wind sifting. The remaining high-caloric fraction can be used to make fuel.

Organics are composted in closed tunnels and/or windrows, with turners for aeration.

After screening and fine preparation to remove contraries, the compost is ready for use.

Start with
shredding

Process starts with a Terminator shredder, with shredding performance configured for the input material. The goal of this step is to homogenize the input stream, and open up bags and packages. The contrary resistance of the shredder lets it take in a wide range of input materials, while the even feed ensures a consistent supply of shredded material to the downstream process steps

Separation
of organics

Since the largest organic content is in the fine fraction, screening is the first step after shredding. The resulting organic fraction is sent to biological preparation. The machine used is either a stationary Komptech drum screen or the Flowerdisc disc screen.

Further
recycling steps

The oversize fraction is put through screening and separating to generate various kinds of RDF and recycling fractions. The nature of the starting material will largely determine whether this mechanical process step is focused more on producing RDF, separating out recyclables or a combination. 

Biological
tratment

The organic fraction is piled into triangular windrows by wheel loader. Regular turning with a Topturn compost turner supplies the process with air and water if necessary. This accelerates composting. The windrow technique can be supplemented by a closed composting tunnel or anaerobic digestion technologies.

Final compost
treatment

To produce compost, the material can be cleaned after the rotting phase using a stationary or mobile screening and separation technologies. The screen overflow is cleared of contraries using wind sifters.
