Scale flexibly,
deliver dependably

Customer Story: Germany

As needed. The Missale Group recycles 50,000 tonnes of wood every year – with the Terminator 5000S and the Crambo 5000.

The Missale Group, headquartered in Nebelschütz, Germany, is currently facing a number of challenges. Managing Director Matthias Missale summarises: “We are currently experiencing a roller-coaster ride in demand. It ranges from customers putting orders on hold to suddenly doubling their production. What’s more, the market rate for a tonne of recycled material is not yet attractive. That makes planning difficult.” In order to clearly position itself against the competition, his company relies on highly efficient technology with dependable performance. “A robust machine that runs for thousands of hours and delivers precise results – that’s why the Missale Group chose Komptech,” adds Missale.

VERY HIGH RECLAMATION RATES

At Lausitzer Holzkontor the Missale Group processes about 50,000 tonnes of C&D waste wood and sawmill and furniture scraps each year, for recycling and thermal reclamation. This feedstock includes hazmat-contaminated materials such as painted window frames and railroad ties, whose processing requires a special permit. The company is the only one in the region with this permit. Wood Manager Karsten Scholz describes the procedure when material is received. “First we sort everything by recyclable classes, and then each class goes to the process that will get the best yield.” For him it is important to return the greatest possible amount of material to the use cycle, as a way to help bind CO₂. “With Komptech technology we can produce very specific fractions for further processing.”

The Komptech Terminator 5000S is used for most preshredding. This low-speed shredder is contrary-resistant, even with difficult materials like bulky waste. “By selecting a defined shredding gap we can home in on the grain size range right in the first shredding step,” explains Scholz. “Most of the metal is also removed in this step.” This is followed by further shredding with the Crambo 5000 and screening by Komptech flip-flow screen. The mobile machines provide maximum flexibility on the approximately 60,000 square metre facility.

TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICE INTERACT

“Thanks to Komptech our machine park is good to very good” is how VP Justus Grosse sees it. The Missale Group follows a clear formula in its machine purchases: functionality, solidity and modern technology, in the right relation to price. The Crambo 5000 purchased in 2020 meets these criteria to the full. This dual-shaft shredder is ideal for processing wood and green cuttings. Its steadily rotating drums with their tough teeth keep contrary resistance high and emissions low. Easy-to-replace screen baskets enable fast grain changes. Karsten Scholz adds, “in day-today operation contrary resistance and flexibility are very important for switching between different grains and materials.” Right now the machine has 6200 operating hours to its name. “That’s solid single-shift operation and proves that the technology is robust,” says Scholz with satisfaction.

„We work closely and confidently with Komptech. We just understand each other.“

In addition to proven technology, Missale Group management places great emphasis on dependable service. Komptech is therefore a great fit for them, since the two companies are very similar. According to Matthas Missale, flexibility and customer focus are central success factors: “We just understand each other. That makes a lot of things easier.” For example, before purchasing the flip-flow screen Justus Grosse and Karsten Scholz travelled to Komptech in Austria to examine the prototype in person. Based on their feedback, the machine was configured exactly for the needs of the Missale Group.

FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY

For the future, Missale Group management is also considering a stationary system that can efficiently process larger quantities of waste wood while simultaneously making multiple fractions. “The demand for wood for generating heat is rising steadily. We expect that in future there will be more small, decentral power plants with annual material consumption of 20,000 tonnes. Those power plants are more sensitive to the fuel quality. It’s our job to deliver that quality dependably, which brings us back to Komptech machines,” says Matthias Missale.

„For the time being we are still diesel-heavy. More renewable drive technology is needed in order for this facility to be ‘grandchildren-friendly.“

In the medium term the Missale Group plans to switch its machine park entirely to electric drive. This is easy to do in a stationary plant. “For the time being we are still diesel-heavy. More renewable drive technology is needed in order for this facility to be ‘grandchildren-friendly’” says Matthias Missale. Komptech is a suitable partner for that. The company already offers many machines in electric versions, and is constantly expanding its renewable drive portfolio.
